Portland Street Photography Workshop
Taking it to the Streets
Sponsored by the Oregon Society of Artists
August 9 to 11, 2024
“Your street photography Workshop was my first experience attending a photography workshop AND what a positive experience it was! Your knowledge and skill were adeptly shared and provided an exceptional learning opportunity.”
~Daniel Chavez, Tucson, Ariz.
Street photography is a genre that records unmediated chance encounters and random incidents in public places. The very publicness of the setting enables the photographer to take candid pictures of strangers, often without their knowledge. Street photographers do not necessarily have a social purpose but often prefer isolating and capturing moments that might go unnoticed. The street photographer is an outsider, a voyeur in the true sense, in that they watch and wait until the right moment occurs and capture it using a camera.
The workshop will begin Friday evening with a presentation that will guide you through many techniques and pitfalls of creating successful street photography, followed by a Q&A session. On Saturday and Sunday, we will visit two different areas of Portland to practice street photography with Steve’s guidance.
Join Steve Anchell for this exciting experience of learning to photograph people and places that are meaningful to you. You need no prior experience in photography or special equipment. This workshop is about engaging and creating meaningful images of people you’ve never met and likely won’t meet again. Bring any capture device, whether a pro camera or a cellphone, film or digital. Steve works with a Sony a7R II and an iPhone, depending on the mood he wakes up in that day.
If you are already a professional photographer, come along and have fun. If you have never held a camera, bring your cell phone camera, come along, learn, and have fun.
Steve Anchell has taught street and documentary photography for the International Center of Photography in NYC, Santa Fe Photography Workshops, and Oregon State University. In the ’00s, he led street photography workshops in Portland for the Portland Photographers’ Forum (PPF). He has been leading street photography workshops in Cuba since 2001.
The Portland Street Photography Workshop: Taking it to the Streets is open to amateur, advanced amateur, and professional photographers who want to photograph with people who share their passion for photography, have a good time and learn or improve their street photography skills.
This is a workshop for all levels. To participate you don’t need to be an expert photographer; film, digital, 4x5 view camera, or cell phone, all are welcome.
For Tuition and enrollment please go to Oregon Society of Artists.
We ask that you refrain from cell phone usage during workshop sessions, including shared meals, and traveling between destinations. Exceptions are family emergencies. If you must use your cell phone for business or social interaction, please wait until you can safely remove yourself from the workshop.
